Boing! Boing! Opps! I mean Boeing Boeing!
Don’t miss the plane – opps again- the bus on Sunday, September 21, for the annual Broadway Flea Market and matinee performance of the hilarious farce Boeing, Boeing, winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play and for Best Actor in a Play. The show was also nominated for Best Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Design, and Best Featured Actress in a Play.
Best Actor Mark Rylance (mostly known as the Artistic Director of London’s recreated Globe Theater where he once played Cleopatra) made his Broadway debut in this comedy, playing a bachelor, still exhibiting the mid-West morality he was raised with, who visits his old school chum, now a playboy who now lives in Paris and juggles three fiancées, who are stewardesses for three different airlines and who stay with him when their flight schedules permit. Assisting in this juggling act is French maid, Christine Baranski, two-time Tony winner, star of TV’s Cybil, and “Tanya” opposite Meryl Streep in the soon-to- be-released movie Momma Mia. This farce has a lot of closing doors and near collisions, providing an afternoon of laughter. Even the curtain call is a bundle of laughs!
The Broadway Flea Market is an annual event raising money to fight HIV-Aids. Browse the stalls in Shubert Allen and on 44th Street to find bargains on costumes, scripts, Playbills, posters, photographs, and theater souvenirs Last year we rubbed elbows with BeBe Neuwirth, Cheyenne Jackson, JoAnne Worley, David Hyde Pierce, Bernadette Peters, Tyne Daly, and Tony Roberts, among many others. Look for this year’s stars!
Our bus will leave the Enzo lot at 9 AM on Sunday, September 21, 2008, stopping for our Jersey friends and then proceeding to the Longacre Theater, at 220 West 48th Street. This is the only stop today. By the time you walk four blocks the market will be in full swing. Everyone makes his own way to the theater in time for the matinee which starts at 3 PM, and our bus will be waiting after the curtain for our nonstop ride home.
The price of $107.00 pp includes rt bus transportation, orchestra seats, driver tip, and refreshments en route. Gift certificates are available - what a great birthday gift. DAILY ITINERARY: May 23 – Depart USA for Gatwick (information on flights not available at this date)
May 24 – Arrive Gatwick. Transfer from airport to Donnington Manor Hotel, nestled in the heart of Kent at the foot of the North Downs. The fifteenth-century style manor house, set in a quiet village location, has a gym, Jacuzzi, and indoor pool (www.bw-donningtonmanor.co.uk). Relax or enjoy the village before the welcome dinner at hotel.
May 25 – Great Dixter House and Garden. After full breakfast at the hotel we visit the Manor, dating from 1220 with additions made in 1464. In 1910 the English architect Edwin Lutyens restored the home and designed the gardens. Completing the whole picture was an important aspect of Lutyen’s designs, and once the residential part of the scheme had taken shape he concentrated on the layout of the gardens, cleverly incorporating the original outbuildings to knit all the elements together. This is a cottage garden on a large scale. The current owner is the well-known gardening writer and lecturer Christopher Lloyd. An inside tour of Great Dixter includes the impressive 15th century great hall, one of the largest surviving timber-framed halls in the country, the cosy low-ceilinged parlour, and the spacious first floor solarium. Other rooms are shown when Mr. Lloyd is not on the premises. Lunch at café on premises is on your own. Return to hotel for dinner on your own.
May 26 – Wisley Garden R.H.S. After today’s full breakfast at the hotel, we tour Wisley, the showplace of the Royal Horticultural Society whose Bicentenary Glasshouse, a huge cathedral-like glass structure, covers an area equal to ten tennis courts and rises to forty feet One of the RHS schools, Wisley has three climatic zones recreating tropical, moist-temperate, and dry-temperate habitats. Outside, view British gardening at its best with wooded slopes of rhododendrons and azaleas, wild daffodils, and an alpine meadow. This gardening Mecca delights and inspires in all seasons, offering ideas and information. The shop contains one of the largest collections of gardening books in the world and a selection of unique gifts. There is also a café on the grounds for lunch on your own. Back to hotel for dinner on your own.
May 27 – Leeds Castle and Sissinghurst. After full breakfast at the hotel we travel to Leeds, described by Lord Conway as the “loveliest (castle) in the world.” Leeds was built in the center of a lake. Surrounded by landscaped gardens, it became known as “Lady’s Castle,” because of the number of queens of England who occupied its rooms. Lunch is on your own. Moving on to Sissinghurst you will see gardens created by Vita Sackville-West and her husband, Harold Nicholson. In addition to the magnificent garden you will visit the aromatic garden around the slender brick castle tower. It is said that Sissinghurst is the best known and most-copied garden in the world. Back to hotel for dinner on your own.
May 28 – Nyman’s Gardens. Full breakfast at the hotel and then transfer to Nyman’s, an extensive collection of rare trees, shrubs, and plants found its the thirty acres, internationally recognized for its beauty, atmosphere, and important plants. The “theatrical” design will delight and surprise everyone as will the sweeping views of the Sussex countryside towards the South Downs. Lunch is on your own at a café on grounds. Dinner tonight at hotel is included.
May 29 – Scotney Castle Garden and Estate. Have your bag ready before full breakfast at hotel. It will be a longer day as we visit the estate and then travel to London. The moated fourteenth-century castle and landscape of Scotney make this one of England’s most romantic places. The view from the Bastion, just below the formal terraces of the “new” Castle, takes in the glorious colors of Ghent azaleas in the late spring. Both parkland and woodland are encompassed in the 770 acre estate, offering brilliant displays of rhododendron and calico bush along its wonderful walks. Lunch on the premises is at your own expense. Travel to London hotel Jurys Clifton-Ford Hotel (www.jurysdoyle.com/cliftonford) with dinner on your own.
May 30 – Chelsea Flower Show. After a continental breakfast at the hotel, get ready for the ultimate in flower shows. You will arrive at Chelsea early to get the maximum time at the show. Join your friends for lunch on your own and perhaps toast the Allentown Garden Club anniversary with the special drink of the Chelsea Flower Show – a Pimm’s cup! Harrod’s is nearby if you need a change of scenery. Transfers back to the hotel are on your own (tube or share a taxi) as is dinner. Save some of your last night in England for packing.
May 31 – After continental breakfast, travel home or extend your stay. Transfers are on your own, but we can arrange them (at additional cost) if the entire group does air travel at approximately the same time. Also at additional cost, Enzo can arrange round trip motorcoach transfers in the U.S. if the group requires them.
